WHAT WE DO
Care for the place we call home.
The BIIA plays a vital role in everyday life on Balboa Island. Our work connects community traditions with the needs of a thriving island.
Infrastructure & maintenance
We work to address the island’s infrastructure needs, including bulkhead repairs, ferry services, and essential utilities such as water, gas, and electricity.
Island beautification
From flower beds at the bridge entrance to public spaces across the island, our projects help preserve Balboa Island’s charm for residents and visitors.
Safety & preparedness
We promote emergency preparedness and bicycle safety initiatives to help our community meet the challenges ahead.
WHO WE ARE
Rooted in community.
The BIIA has been in existence since before 1918. On December 16, 1952, it was incorporated in California as a General Nonprofit Corporation with a shared purpose:
“To provide a non-partisan, non-profit instrument through which the property owners of Balboa Island can work creatively together to promote the common good, to study and give public consideration to the problems and the interests of Balboa Island.”
On the same date, the California Franchise Tax Board declared the BIIA exempt from State franchise tax as an organization operated exclusively as a civic league. The association files an annual Statement of Domestic Nonprofit Corporation.
